Doorbell cameras...

Looking around, it seems the ring doorbell cameras want a monthly fee for their cloud storage, but I found this one, a refurb, with no fees, looks to be a decent setup…

Anyone using, or tried one of these?

Pro’s Con’s??

Several choices!

My understanding is that you need a side-mount doorbell. Otherwise everyone walking (or driving) by will be seen by your camera, and it will trigger.

I have two door cameras, but none are in the door bell.

My Ring doorbell isn’t triggered by cars or people in the street.

The one selected is still in my Amazon Cart, but is a refurb, easily returned. But what I was after was something simple no monthly fees, and it was top of the list…

I had looked at a larger multi camera system, but wanted wired, and never was able to decide. Neighbor has Owl, but doesn’t like it, others have Ring, but I didn’t realize they had a $3/mo fee, well I have multiple could accounts pay a little for iCloud, but it’s 50Gb, I keep some vital genealogy files either there or Dropbox, so as long as it’s accessible over my Wifi, it should work out… The bigger systems don’t generally include a doorbell camera, interestingly…

Might be worthwhile, to just add another at the back door/deck area, or my shop door at this price… ($69)

Maybe they fixed it? I looked a few years ago, and the number one complaint (by far) was that the camera triggered every time someone walked or drove by. But that was a few years ago. It’s why I didn’t buy when it was at Costco.

Made the buy…

Doesn’t work out, return it, but I also chased around several pf the ring things, and in the end they got pricey quick once you got into add ons, so this will give me a glimpse, only wish it had a high power laser option available, zap any creeps messing’ around…

If it works out, will see what the options are at that point…

I have used these. No storage problem.

It’s probably a function of the distance. I don’t have an issue but my Ring doorbell is probably 75’ from the road. My daughter’s Ring doorbell did pick up people walking but the sidewalk was about 25’ from the Ring doorbell.

It has definitely improved. For the past couple of years, you can even go into the app and highlight what areas of the field of view you want it to use to trigger the camera.

Update - The ‘eufy’ doorbell camera arrived, I looked over all the parts, downloaded its iOS software, that took me an hour of fiddling around, to finally set up login, password, facial recognition on my iPhone, picky, tedious, but made it OK.

Then I realized, that it’s only on my phone, not the computer, not DW’s phone, so if I leave, to wander, shop, whatever, she’s there without Notifications or access! That is not right…

So this morning I packed it all up, will return it, and continue to look for a more compatible setup…

Disappointing…

For now I’ll go buy another button like what’s there, thought it was a decent time to update…

Things like this are meant for single dwellers, not family…

Or what we hoped we’d paid for…

There was an option to log into an Apple HomeKit account, but as I don’t have any other HomeKit gear, that was not going to help… But it might have allowed sharing the access, so I’ll be looking closer at compatible devices that go that way, then there would be, or should be, a simple browser access which I couldn’t tell when I ordered this little widget…

I suppose I could use it on my own to keep an eye on my shop, but, better to just return it, start over… Zero cost, just time…

That’s odd. Our camera app (Blink) has an account. Anyone can log into it (who knows the login). Then they receive notifications. 1poorlady and 1poorkid both have it.

But no notifications on the PC.

Interesting… Will look…

Looking at this one just now…

Likely just have to set up DW’s Home app to see it…

The Verge seems to have a decent perspective on the marketplace and the foibles of doorbell cameras…

My point is that the cheapest solution isn’t always the best solution. Maybe paying a small monthly fee helps provide an easier, better product.

I’m not understanding something. Did you download the app onto DW’s phone and try to connect it to the device?

Understood, just sorting out the options… BL has a Nest setup, they both share access… No monthly’s, so a matter of talking to more folks…

Returned the eufy just now, then stopped by my hardware store, the doorbell buttons, like the one that failed, were sold out, likely still having shipping problems… They did have a variety of Nest, ring and related cameras, similarly priced as online…

Probably should go see if it’s silly a broken wire before I find a replacement…
