Just because I was curious about a topic, does not mean I want to track that thread ad infinitum. I would rather NOT be forced to track stuff and then have to go back and reset to normal or ignore.
How do I get the boards to stop automatically thinking I want to follow EVERYTHING I look at??
PS - I have updated my profile to never track topics I am on for more than 5 minutes…does NOT work. Still tracking the moment I open a topic.
Could you share a screenshot or info that says why the topic is being tracked? Like this, at the bottom of the topics:
I.e. if it says “because you have read this topic” or something else.
Man, if you ever find out please pass along how you did it. Theirs’s one board I can’t rid of.
You are tracking several categories and tags, which means you’ll receive notifications for everything there, regardless of the time spent reading. You might want to review those and see if one or two are causing the problem.
Did you try clicking the Tracking pull down menu and set to normal?
Andy
I’m gonna take a wild guess that the board in question is Saul’s board. I believe @CMFMints has taken care of most of the problem for you. However, there might still be individual threads that you have “read”, and you’re still tracking those threads. You can check if that’s case by taking a look here:

If you see a million threads from that board, then the fix for bulk of the problem didn’t work. If you see several, that you recognize and perhaps remember having “read”, then the fix worked and what’s left is taking care of those remaining threads.
To do this might require a little bit of work. Basically, you need to visit them one by one and get rid of “tracking”. When you’re inside a thread, look for the “bell” to the right (assuming you’re using a computer):
If you click on the bell you’ll see something like this:
Click on Muted and run away from the thread.
The bad news is that this can be a hassle. The good news is that you don’t need to do this all at once. You can basically do it by playing Whack-a-Mole. When something pops up, go inside and whack it. Eventually, there should be nothing left to whack.
Note: This is under the assumption that Jen has successfully muted the board for you.
(Note for others reading this: You don’t need to select Muted for a topic when the category is muted. Normal should do the trick and might be better.)
Yes, using the drop down works for that ONE topic. I have to do that EVERY TIME I open a new thread on the boards I am following.
I see that there is a default that if I am following a Category it automatically sets to tracking?? That’s stupid. have Macro Economic trends for scanning, not tracking everything.

Hey Raylight. I must be doing something wrong. I clicked on the provided link and saw pages of Saul’s “stuff”. I opened one and saw the little bell you discussed with a line through it. I then randomly chose about 10 more notes but there was no bell.
There’s got to be an easier way considering there’s a boatload of his “stuff”. Thanks for your help though. I appreciate it. It’s a shame it doesn’t work for me. Then again in 13 months I’ll be 80 so what do you expect from an old man.

There must be a better way. Do you think you could check here and look for a bell at the top?

There should be a bell with a line through it. Things tend to move around a bit but it should look something like this:
Yes, I see the bell with a line through it. It’s in a different position (as you suggested) from the first bell I saw.
OK, now I’ve forgotten what to do. Am I supposed to go back to your first provided link and look for another bell and remember that the bell could be in a different place?
Also, what is the significance of the line through the bell vs. no line though the bell?
Regards,
ImAGolfer
Beware of the bell, it creeps
And leaps and glides and slides
Across the floor
Right through the door
And all around the wall
A splotch, a blotch
Be careful of the bell

You made my day.
It’s a bit late (in my timezone), but for now, to avoid unnecessary bell hunting. No need to go back to my first link and look for bells. By going to Saul’s board you confirmed that at least the board is “muted”.
The significance of the line is that new stuff from that board won’t (shouldn’t) appear in places like “Everything”.
But other bells - those lurking inside threads - can veto that bell. A black bell like this one
or this one inside a thread will make that thread appear. Beware of the black bell.
If you enter one of those threads you don’t want to see and scroll all the way to the bottom you should see a bell along with a description.
Thanks Ray. Man, that’s a lot to remember about a darn bell. I think I’ll just learn to live with it. Thanks for your efforts. I appreciate it.
I do not want to mute the whole board. I want to see posts and occasionally look at some. This needs to happen without automatically setting them to tracking.
I like Sauls board, I want to know every time there are new posts. I do not want to open it, realize I don’t want to follow, and then do extra work to get out of that default.
Another example, Industry Discussions, I want to follow, I do NOT want to track everything in that category. If I mute it, then I will never see that new posts exist. Meaning, then I have to do even more work and click open every one of the categories or tags I want to follow.
